In Player, select and Play the new virtual machine. Look for the line ide0:0.fileName and change to the name of the vhd file. Copy in the vhd file to this folder then edit the VMware virtual machine configuration file (vmx) in Notepad. I deleted the VMware virtual disk file (vmdk). Open the folder where you selected to store the virtual machine files. The new virtual machine will be selected in the Player window, but you need to click Home at this point to unlock the files. All other settings can be left at defaults. I also only want to give the virtual machine one monitor, so I specified my monitor settings. Remove the USB controller to prevent your attached devices from causing conflicts and you can remove the Printer too.

I raised the Memory to 1 GB because my machine has enough RAM. The created disk does not matter with using an existing virtual disk file but I want to delete the Player disk file so I just selected single file. Give it a name to show in Player and the location to store the virtual machine files. Select Microsoft Windows, Windows XP Professional. I will be showing steps using an existing virtual disk file.
